Here's Why Your Hair Deserves a Break

Protective styling is fun, easy, and convenient for women on-the-go. While we encourage low maintenance styles, it's also important to give your hair a break every now and then.

Why does my hair need a break?

Constant tension on your scalp from braiding or weaves can lead to breakage and potential hair loss. Furthermore, if you suffer from dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis, or other scalp irritation, the scalp will likely be worse 4-8 weeks later when the added hair is removed.

So, what should I do?

Here are a few things you can do to continue to have fun with protective styles, while also keeping your scalp safe.

  • Ask your stylist not to braid your hair too tight when getting braids or weaves.
  • Take breaks in between protective styles (if you wore braids for a month, wait at least two months before getting them done again).
  • While wearing protective styles, don't forget to keep your scalp moisturized - especially around the edges.

If you're not comfortable wearing your natural hair, this is the perfect time to find a natural style that works for you. Some of our favorite looks include:

  • Natural braids (with just your own hair)
  • Twist-outs
  • Wash-and-go styles
  • Wrap styles
  • Roller or rod sets
